> SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) — We’ve said it before, but it’s worth repeating now that Zynga’s IPO is here.
All its financials point to the company being more profitable than Groupon Inc. as a growth business in its first years as a public company — and thus a better stock to buy as well.
The Zynga offering, which holds its Nasdaq debut on Friday, will also be a better predictor of the reception of any future Facebook IPO, as both companies — unlike Groupon — are profitable.
Just don’t be foolish by buying Zynga high on the first day of trading; you’ll almost certainly have the chance to buy it lower sometime in 2012. Read more about Zynga setting its IPO price at $10 a share.
The stock charts of four other Internet companies to go public this year show that the underwriters of those offerings did a good job creating value through a scarcity of shares. That scarcity created billions of dollars of market capitalization for HomeAway Inc. , Zillow Inc. , Pandora Media Inc. and LinkedIn Corp. .
That temporary value couldn’t be sustained once a more-liquid market for the shares existed, however, and the stock prices of all four companies are well off the highs provided by their investment bankers. All four stocks also are trading below their 50-day moving averages, signaling that further declines are more likely than a move higher.
Pandora and HomeAway are both trading below their respective IPO prices while both Groupon and Zillow are about 15 percent higher than theirs. LinkedIn has performed the best in the public markets.
Groupon’s stock, which went public in November, doesn’t yet have a 50-day moving average, of course, and can’t yet be said to trade in a liquid market, as its investment banks still control a large chunk of the issue’s thin float.
We told you last month that at least one subset of the trading public who got their hands on Groupon shares on their first day of public trading – some users of the online financial services startup SigFig – were smart enough to recognize the bubble-like valuation of that stock, and so tried to flip it.
But they lost an average of 3.3%. Read that previous column.
Profitable – with a catch Zynga is different, of course, because unlike the other companies it’s coming to market with a financial track record that combines both fast top-line growth and a business that’s already profitable.
Zynga’s $100 million cashout
While many of its investors have been waiting for the company's IPO to cash in their stock, Zynga CEO Mark Pincus has already cashed in more than $100 million of shares.
And for that reason, Zynga shares may see more persistent demand.
“I think we’ll see more buy-and-hold investors with Zynga,” said Mike Sha, chief executive of SigFig. “For our users, this is a more highly anticipated offering than Groupon.” Read previous column comparing Zynga and Groupon’s financials.
Yet Zynga also has some yellow flags, including one glaring strategic weakness: its dependence on the Facebook platform for nearly all its revenue. That allowed Facebook to squeeze higher transaction fees out of Zynga by requiring its users to pay for Zynga virtual goods using the Facebook’s payments system.
That move nearly wiped out Zynga’s second-quarter net income, which fell to $1.39 million from $13.9 million a year earlier. Read more about that here.
Higher R&D costs San Francisco-based Zynga also faces higher research and development costs as it competes for engineers with other Silicon Valley tech companies, including Google, Facebook and Twitter. In the second quarter, Zynga’s R&D costs rose $91.7 million, or 60%, from the year-earlier period.
And because it’s a game company, Zynga’s business will be seasonal, with spurts of revenue in the wake of new game releases while quarters without major releases will see slower sequential revenue growth. A seasonal business can lead to a choppier stock chart.
All this is why, even if you are a Zynga bull, it makes sense to wait for the IPO momentum to fade before buying the stock. The post-IPO performance of the class of 2011 is another reason.
If you pay too much for a stock, even one belonging to a profitable company, your fate is sealed.
As Tim Keating, chief executive of the investment firm Keating Capital, recently told MarketWatch: “Facebook might be the best company on the planet, but if you invest at the wrong price, you’re not going to make any money.”

While a case against a young U.S. soldier blamed for leaking thousands of classified and sensitive official documents resumed in a military court Saturday, supporters gathered outside to hail him as a hero wiki occupational therapy.
The day was also Private First Class Bradley Manning’s 24th birthday.
Hundreds of protesters said they wanted to give Manning all the support they could, and marched along the base’s gated compound where the hearing is taking place.
Some drivers honked in support, while others rolled down their window yelling “traitor.”
But army veteran Ellen Barfield said Manning was a hero to many.“People who have inside information that the public should know about and they disclose it, I consider heroes,” she said. “We do not know if that is what Bradley Manning did but that is what he is accused of and a lot of us, all of us here, consider him a hero.”Cartoonist Seth Tobocman who was drawing new protest signs said Manning had continued to impress him since the hearings, expected to last about a week, began Friday.“I can tell from seeing him in court that he is a strong guy and he should just stay strong and keep focused the way he is doing,” Tobocman said.
VOA - Nico ColombantA veteran was among those supporting Bradley Manning.
The hearings are to determine whether prosecutors have enough evidence to bring Manning to a military trial.Manning, who was an intelligence analyst stationed in Baghdad, is accused of leaking hundreds of thousands of sensitive items, including Iraq and Afghanistan war logs, which were then released on the WikiLeaks website. Charges range from the theft of records to allegedly aiding the enemy. The U.S. government has also said the released information threatened military and diplomatic sources, while also straining relations with other governments.Lawyers for Manning say they will argue much of the inform
